Box Score
POTSDAM, N.Y.—The Castleton State Spartans (2-0) shook off a late game-tying goal by the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (1-1) to defeat the Bears 2-1 in double overtime. Senior midfielder Trevor Kotrady knocked home a loose ball in the 107th minute to give Castleton the win. Spartan junior goalkeeper Nate Koeneman finished with five saves and was named the tournament's most valuable player.
The first half was dominated by great goalkeeping. In the 11th minute, Potsdam senior goalie
Jake Gyder stopped two Spartan attempts from point blank range. Castleton gained momentum from the chances and though they didn't score, carried the play through the middle of the period. The Bears got two strong chances from sophomore midfielder
Alex Minsker and senior defender
Vic Colasacco in the final 10 minutes of the half, but Koeneman turned them both aside.
The Spartans regained their momentum in the second half and challenged Potsdam's defense. Castleton's hard work finally paid off at the 64:56 mark. Junior midfielder Spencer Dandurand slipped past the Bears defenders and blasted a shot on Gyder. Potsdam's goalie made a great save, but Dandurand buried his rebound to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Castleton's defense smothered the Bears offense and the Spartans appeared to be heading for a shutout victory. However, Potsdam was finally able to break through. In the 86th minute, Koeneman stopped a header from Bears sophomore midfielder
Conor Engle. Sophomore forward
Eduardo Figueroa collected a rebound and sent a shot that seemed destined for the right corner of the goal before it was deflected by a sliding Spartan defender. Freshman forward
Chris Chiarella buried the second rebound with just 3:24 left in regulation. Neither team threatened again in regulation.
Gyder smothered the only shot on goal in the first overtime and the teams spent most of the second in the middle of the field. At 106:14, Kotrady ended the contest with an assist from junior defender Dominic Heller.
Gyder finished a strong day with six saves. Castleton outshot the Bears 21-14. Chiarella, Figueroa and freshman forward
Dylan Krueger were named to the all-tournament team. Heller, Kotrady and Dandurand earned the same honor for Castleton.
Potsdam looks to rebound on Saturday, Sept. 8 when the Bears travel to Old Westbury to take on the Panthers at noon.

Mustangs edge Hawks in College Cup Consolation
POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Mustangs (1-1) downed the Hilbert College Hawks (0-2) in the consolation round of the SUNY Potsdam Men's Soccer College Cup. A penalty kick save and two second half goals lifted the Mustangs to a 2-1 decision.
The first half began with high energy from both teams as quick exchanges of possession led to fast break opportunities. Hilbert created a chance off the start when freshman midfielder Jordan Lynch just missed wide of the right post. Morrisville countered as junior forward Tom Huber (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) fired a shot high right just above the crossbar. Hilbert escaped an early Mustang goal when a defender standing on the goal line blocked a shot from freshman defender Brian Culkin (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip). A costly mistake from a Mustang player in the box gave the Hawks a penalty kick opportunity with ten minutes remaining in the half. Morrisville freshman goalie Rob Larkin (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton) made a diving save to keep the score tied at 0-0. The Hawks controlled the ball for the remainder of half.
A halftime pep talk sparked the Morrisville Mustangs as they came out firing on all cylinders. The Mustangs challenged every ball from the start, which seemed to rattle the Hawks. Morrisville struck first as sophomore forward Jacob Chase (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) slipped the ball past the goalie off a pass from Huber. Hilbert was able to settle in and counter with near misses by freshmen Austin Mathis (Rochester, N.Y./Wheatland-Chili) and Jonathan Davison (Edwards, N.Y./LeMoyne/Potsdam). The Hawks challenged on a breakaway slip pass to Lynch, but Larkin made a big kick save. Morrisville nearly scored again when freshman forward Sawyer Razy (Lee Center, N.Y./Rome Free Academy) ripped a shot from the right side. Hawk junior goalie Jeremy Kraska (Elma, N.Y./Iroquois Central) made a deflection save that set the ball over the crossbar. The Mustangs extended the lead to two goals in the 78th minute after freshman midfielder Karim Ouedraogo (Burkina Faso/International Collegiate) found the head of senior midfielder Sean Shields (Rotterdam, N.Y./Mohonasen) on a long cross. Hilbert generated a last chance effort following a foul at the edge of the box in the 88th minute. Mathis passed the ball to Lynch on the indirect kick. Lynch fired a bullet into the back of the net pulling the Hawks within one. Hilbert sent several volleys into the box after the goal, but could not get the equalizer as time expired in the game.
Morrisville State totaled 13 shots to Hilbert College's 16. Larkin recorded seven saves and Kraska registered four stops.
Kraska, Hilbert senior defender James Knapp (Lockport, N.Y./St. Mary's Lancaster), Larkin and Morrisville's sophomore midfielder Joey Plummer (Gates, N.Y./Gates-Chili) were named to the all-tournament team.
