Junior defenseman Scott Taglione (Ballston Lake, N. Y. / Shenendehowa) scored twice, Zef Saljanin (Yorktown Heights, N. Y. / Yorktown) added a goal and an assist and Alex Winiarski (Great Neck, N. Y. / St. Anthony's) was credited with two assists as host Oneonta State defeated SUNY Potsdam 4-1 in a SUNYAC men's soccer match on Saturday afternoon.
The teams played to a scoreless stalemate through the first 35 minutes of the match when Taglione headed in a flick shot on a restart feed from Winiarski. Less than three minutes later, sophomore forward Jake Southerland (Syracuse, N. Y. / West Genesee) headed in his third goal of the season on a corner kick from Saljanin.Â
The Red Dragons (9-2-3 overall, 5-0-1 SUNYAC) added a third goal on a header from Taglione in the 48
th minute. Saljanin added to the lead with his seventh goal of the season on a pass from Hans Purtell (Johnson City, N. Y. / Johnson City).Â
The Bears (7-6-1 overall, 1-3-1 SUNYAC) were outshot 18-7 including 7-3 with shots on goal.Â
Junior midfielder
Conor Engle (Auburn, N. Y. / Auburn) played just 33 minutes, but still was able to score his first goal of the season on a header from sophomore forward
James Turcott (Washingtonville, N.Y. / Washingtonville) in the box. The goal came in the 75
th minute and marked Engle's first goal since Oct. 21 of 2011 against SUNY Brockport.
Turcott has now registered an assist in back-to-back games after picking up one in Friday's 3-1 victory at New Paltz.Â
Sophomore forward
Tom Benedetto (Queensbury, N.Y. / Queensbury) and junior midfielder
Alex Minsker (Brewster, N. Y. / Brewster) each threatened to score, but were stymied by Oneonta State goal keeper Daniel DeBottis (Cicero, N. Y. C-NS).
Potsdam junior
Alex Pavone (Churchville, N.Y. / Churchville-Chili) got the nod for his second consecutive start in goal and picked up three saves in playing the full match. He dropped to 1-1.Â
Potsdam will return home to play Fredonia Friday at 3 p.m. at Maxcy Turf Field in another SUNY conference match.
