Men's Soccer: Oneonta State upends Potsdam 4-1

Box Score
Junior defenseman Scott Taglione (Ballston Lake, N. Y. / Shenendehowa) scored twice, Zef Saljanin (Yorktown Heights, N. Y. / Yorktown) added a goal and an assist and Alex Winiarski (Great Neck, N. Y. / St. Anthony's) was credited with two assists as host Oneonta State defeated SUNY Potsdam 4-1 in a SUNYAC men's soccer match on Saturday afternoon.

The teams played to a scoreless stalemate through the first 35 minutes of the match when Taglione headed in a flick shot on a restart feed from Winiarski.  Less than three minutes later, sophomore forward Jake Southerland (Syracuse, N. Y. / West Genesee) headed in his third goal of the season on a corner kick from Saljanin.

The Red Dragons (9-2-3 overall, 5-0-1 SUNYAC) added a third goal on a header from Taglione in the 48th minute.  Saljanin added to the lead with his seventh goal of the season on a pass from Hans Purtell (Johnson City, N. Y. / Johnson City).
The Bears (7-6-1 overall, 1-3-1 SUNYAC) were outshot 18-7 including 7-3 with shots on goal.

Junior midfielder Conor Engle (Auburn, N. Y. / Auburn) played just 33 minutes, but still was able to score his first goal of the season on a header from sophomore forward James Turcott (Washingtonville, N.Y. / Washingtonville) in the box.  The goal came in the 75th minute and marked Engle's first goal since Oct. 21 of 2011 against SUNY Brockport.

Turcott has now registered an assist in back-to-back games after picking up one in Friday's 3-1 victory at New Paltz.

Sophomore forward Tom Benedetto (Queensbury, N.Y. / Queensbury) and junior midfielder Alex Minsker (Brewster, N. Y. / Brewster) each threatened to score, but were stymied by Oneonta State goal keeper Daniel DeBottis (Cicero, N. Y. C-NS).

Potsdam junior Alex Pavone (Churchville, N.Y. / Churchville-Chili) got the nod for his second consecutive start in goal and picked up three saves in playing the full match.  He dropped to 1-1.

Potsdam will return home to play Fredonia Friday at 3 p.m. at Maxcy Turf Field in another SUNY conference match.
