Bears explode past Raptors, 5-1

Box Score
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (5-1-1) scored three goals in the last 10 minutes en route to a 5-1 victory over Bard College (3-2) in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. Junior midfielder Matt Parsons (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls), junior midfielder Patrick Mylod (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and senior defender Travis Jordan (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) each scored their first career goals. Junior midfielder Mario Riccardi (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) also scored along with junior forward Ben Firlit's (South Glens Falls, N.Y./South Glens Falls) team-leading fifth tally of the year.

The Bears had the better of the possession in the first half and it paid off in the 29th minute. Senior forward Eduardo Figueroa (Rochester, N.Y./Dr. Freddie Thomas) launched a rocket of a shot from about 22 yards in the center of the field. It was stopped by Bard goalie Taylor Bond on a short hop, but he couldn't hang on. Parsons pounced on the rebound and flicked the ball high into the upper right corner, where it hit the crossbar/post and bounced down over the goal line by just a few inches. Potsdam held that 1-0 lead at halftime and a 9-4 edge in shots.

Mylod made it 2-0 in the 66th minute when he struck a shot from 24 yards out after a turnover at the top of the box and beat Bond to the upper left corner. Bard cut the lead in half in the 72nd minute, when sophomore Austin Higgins scored on a penalty kick after John Flynn was fouled in the box. The Raptors pushed forward late and paid for it, as Firlit, Riccardi and Jordan each scored unassisted goals in the final 10 minutes.

Sophomore goalkeeper Nick Davies (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) made two saves to earn his fourth victory of the season. It was his 10th career victory, which ties him for sixth on the program's known career wins list with Lucas Smith '03. Bond stopped nine shots in the loss.

The Bears outshot the Raptors 27-9, but Bard finished with a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

Potsdam is off to the second best start in school history behind a 6-1 stretch in 2002. The Bears opened the season at 5-2 in 1965, 1983, 2003 and 2013. Today's victory gives the Bears' Class of 2015 (Figueroa, Jordan, Alex Minsker, Cliff Bondi, Conor Engle, Brian Emery and Rondely Rawlins) 25 career wins. The victories tie the Class of 2004 for the most in program history.

The Bears offense has now scored three or more goals in four of the teams last five games.

The Bears look to continue their hot streak when they host Liberty League power St. Lawrence University at 4 p.m. on Friday.
