McClusky’s 5 goals lift Bears over Eagles for season’s first win

Box Score HILTON HEAD, S.C.—The SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (1-1) never trailed as they downed Eastern University (Pa.) (1-4) 14-9 for its first win of the season on Wednesday afternoon. Junior attack Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) had seven points (5g, 2a) to lead the Bears and senior attack Bailey Weigel (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) and sophomore midfielder Murphy Newman (Canton, N.Y./Berkshire School) each had three goals and two assists. Anna Charlebois had five goals for Eastern.

Potsdam started quickly as McClusky buried a pass from Newman just 34 seconds into the game. The Eagles' Julie Haggan tied the score 1:02 later, but McClusky got the next two with the first coming off an assist from senior captain Margaret Wall (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas) to make it 3-1 at 23:50. Eastern's Anna Charlebois made it a one-goal game 24 seconds later, but again the Bears answered. Sophomore midfielder Alyssa Ferenczy (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) found McClusky for her fourth of the day at 16:31. Weigel picked up the next draw control at assisted on Newman's first 13 seconds later and the Bears were up 5-2. After a goal from Eagle Stephanie Hogan, Weigel struck for two straight for a 7-3 lead with 6:56 on the clock. Jaquelyn Janda got Eastern to within 7-4, but Potsdam countered with two straight. Sophomore Michaela Cole (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) scored her first of the year at 1:55 and McClusky notched her fifth at 1:02. Hogan scored an unassisted marker to close the scoring with 43 seconds remaining, but Potsdam took a 9-5 advantage into the half.

Eastern gave the Bears a scare as it opened the half with three goals in-a-row from Charlebois to trim the lead to just 9-8. However, Potsdam responded with a 5-0 run for its biggest lead of the day at 14-8. Newman scored the first two, with the second coming by way of an assist from McClusky. Weigel scored her third at 13:38 and McClusky assisted Ferenczy 48 seconds after that. Sophomore attack Katie Lapinski (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) assisted on midfielder junior Maggie McCabe's (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) first of the year for Potsdam's last tally of the day at 7:29. Charlebois added her fifth of the day at 1:48, but it was too little too late for the Eagles as they fell 14-9.

Sophomore Devan Olschewske (Canandaigua, N.Y./Cananadaigua) was strong in goal, earning her fourth career win.

The Bears face Muhlenberg tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. for the final contest of their southern swing.
