POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's and women's lacrosse teams will hit the road for this week's SUNYAC Playoffs. The fourth seeded men will head to top-seed SUNY Cortland (11-5, 6-0) on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. matchup. The fifth seeded women will travel to fourth seeded Oswego State (11-3, 6-2) tomorrow for another 4 p.m. contest.
Men
The men posted a 10-5 record and a 3-3 mark in the SUNYAC. After falling in their opener, the Bears rattled off a program record nine wins in a row. The winning streak included a dramatic come-from-behind 11-9 victory over Clarkson, the first win against the Golden Knights in nine seasons.
The Bears were very balanced offensively as the stop seven scorers all reached double digits. Last year's Rookie of the Year
Eric Soderquist (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) is leading the team in scoring again this season with 31 goals and 13 assists for 44 points. Two-time All-SUNYAC midfielder and senior captain
Pat Bonafede (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) is having a career year with 19 goals and 20 assists for 39 points. His average of 1.25 assists-per-game is third best in the SUNYAC. Senior captain
Ed Doherty (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst) had 26 goals and eight assists for 34 points. Doherty's 92 career goals tie him for fifth place on the program's all-time list. Junior midfielder
Matt Moran (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) is having a breakout year with 19 goals and eight assists this season. Senior midfielder
Brian Martin (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and junior attackman
Berkley Stone (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) are also having their best seasons in Bears' jerseys with 23 (14g, 9a) and 20 (18, 2) points, respectively.
All-SUNYAC and preseason All-American
Lindsey Pound (Henderson, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) has led a defense that has allowed just 9.34 goals-per-game in 2016. Pound is leading the SUNYAC with 34 caused turnovers and the team in ground balls with 69. Senior defender
Andrew Swords (Black River, N.Y./Carthage) has put together his finest season with 36 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers.
All-SUNYAC goalie and senior captain
Pete Gropp (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) has posted a 9-5 record, 9.51 goals-against-average as well as a SUNYAC-leading .568 save percentage. He ranks seventh on the Bears all-time saves list with 349 and his 15 wins are the third most on program history.
Women
The women matched the program record for wins with a 7-8 mark and went 3-4 in the SUNYAC. On April 19, they defeated SUNY Oneonta 15-14 in overtime for the program's first ever win over the Red Dragons.
Led by senior attack
Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) and junior midfielder
Murphy Newman (Canton, N.Y./Berkshire School) the Bears women have had a record-setting offensive year. Their 186 goals, 90 assists and 276 points this season are all program bests. McClusky has totaled a career-high 68 points on 19 goals and a program record 49 assists. She needs just four points to top Hall of Famer Alisha Schaad's 2008 single season points record of 71. Her 3.27 assists-per-game this season lead the SUNYAC and are third best in the nation. McClusky is the program's all-time assists leader with 112 and second on the program's all-time scoring list and 198 points. She could become the second Bear to reach 200 points at Oswego on Tuesday. Newman's 57 goals this season are the second most in program history behind Schaad's 62. In just two seasons with the Bears she compiled 104 points on 88 goals and 16 assists, placing her eighth in scoring and sixth in goals all-time. Junior midfielder
Michaela Cole (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) has exploded for a personal best 42 (38-4) points this season, tripling her career-high. Junior attack
Katie Lapinski (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) is also having career year with 22 goals and seven assists for 29 points, nearly doubling her previous best. Freshman
Cayla O'Connor (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) has also played an important role for the Bears, picking up 41 draw controls and chipping in 10 goals and two assists for 12 points.
Senior
Maggie McCabe (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) leads a strong defense that has allowed 12.74 goals-per-game and caused 109 turnovers. McCabe leads the Bears in draw controls (72) ground balls (37) and caused turnovers (16). She ranks third in the SUNYAC in draw controls. McCabe is fifth in program history in draw controls (106) and caused turnovers (46) and seventh in ground balls (120). Seniors
Lizzie Marchbanks (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) and
Brittany Blake (South Glens Falls, N.Y./South Glens Falls) have also been defensive stalwarts this season, starting every game. Marchbanks has caused 15 turnovers, collected 22 draw controls and picked up 22 ground balls. Blake has totaled 11 caused turnovers, 29 ground balls and seven draw controls. Freshman
Meaghan Paige (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) has also made her presence felt with 16 caused turnovers and 21 ground balls.
Junior
Devan Olschewske (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) was 7-8 in goal with a 13.27 goals-against-average and a .421 save percentage. She ranks second in program history with 15 career wins and is fourth all-time with 341 saves.
