POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (5-7, 2-4 SUNYAC) defeated Plattsburgh State (3-12, 0-6) 14-10 on Wednesday evening. Senior captain
Cam Talcott (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) led the Bears with four goals, while freshman midfielder
Drew Rose (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) scored three. Junior midfielders
Peyton Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) and
Alex Burley (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) each scored twice and sophomore goalie
Liam O'Neil (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) made 12 saves for his third career win.
The Bears got the first five goals of the contest, beginning with a man-up goal from Rose at 12:56 on an assist from senior captain
Henry Reber (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua). Freshman midfielder
Owen Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) set up Talcott's first at 11:24 and then Reber, Burley and Rose scored in succession for a 5-0 advantage at 4:08 of the first quarter. Senior midfielder Zach Gill (Miller Place, N.Y./Rocky Point) got the Cardinals on the board at 2:46, but Potsdam led 5-1 after one quarter.
The teams split the four goals of the second quarter. Senior captain
Alec Miller (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) setup Talcott's second at 14:01 and
Peyton Walsh struck at 9:59. Junior attackman Michael Swift (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) scored for Plattsburgh at 10:51 and senior midfielder Stephen Kane (Hampden, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) got the Cardinals within 7-3 with 2:15 left in the half.
Potsdam scored three of the first four goals of the third quarter.
Owen Walsh set up Burley at 12:24 and senior attackman
Ryan Spaman (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) assisted on Talcott's third marker at 11:25. After Gill netted his second for Plattsburgh, Talcott buried his fourth at 5:17 and the Bears led 10-4. Sophomore attackman John Eiseman (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) scored the Cardinals' fifth goal at 2:29, but Potsdam answered with two goals in the last 1:48 of the quarter. Senior midfielder
Ethan Clark (Seven Valleys, Pa./Spring Grove) found sophomore attackman
Cobie Cree (Hogansburg, N.Y./Salmon River) at the left side of the net at 1:48 and Rose barreled his way in to complete the hat trick with 16 seconds on the clock. The Bears led 12-5 after 45 minutes.
Plattsburgh pieced together a 5-2 run in the fourth quarter, but ran out of time. Kane scored twice and senior midfielder Matt Trypaluk (Miller Place, N.Y./Rocky Point) and Eiseman each found the back of the net as the Cardinals closed to within 12-9 with 2:30 to play.
Peyton Walsh responded at 2:11 with an empty-netter to slow Plattsburgh's momentum, but Kane countered with his fourth at 1:47. With time winding down, Miller scored in close with 25 seconds remaining to seal the win.
Senior Christian Bassi (Windham, N.H./Kimball Union Academy) made 12 saves and allowed 13 goals in 58:34 for the Cardinals and sophomore Dan Clements (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) allowed a goal in the other 1:26.
The Bears host SUNY Oneonta on Saturday at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.
