POTSDAM, N.Y.— Five SUNY Potsdam student-athletes have earned a spot on the Men's At-Large Academic All-District Team. The all-district teams, selected by College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA), recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their athletic and academic performances.
To be eligible for the honor, athletes need to maintain at least a 3.5 GPA, be a sophomore, a starter, or significant reserve and have participated in at least 50 percent of their team's contests. Student-athletes in graduate school are allowed to be nominated if they maintained an undergrad and graduate GPA of 3.5. Academic All-District honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot.
Alec Roy (North Tonawanda, N.Y/North Tonawanda) is a graduate student for the men's volleyball team. The Psychology major is a two-time member of the SUNYAC Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll. This season Roy recorded 16 kills, 144 assists, 29 digs, seven service aces and six blocks. In his Bears career, the setter totaled 122 kills, 1,138 assists, 232 digs, 57 service aces and 47 blocks.
Ryan Lieth (Warwick, N.Y./New York Apple Core) is a senior defenseman on the men's hockey team. The business administration major is a three-time member of the SUNYAC Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll. This season, Lieth earned third team All-SUNYAC honors, while leading the Bears in scoring with 16 points on three goals and 13 assists. In his three seasons, he played in 63 games, burying five goals and recording 24 assists for 29 points.
Nick Alfieri (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) is a senior forward for the men's hockey team. Alfieri is also a three-time member SUNYAC Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll. The politics major contributed two goals and ten assists for the Bears this season. A Bears captain this winter, Alfieri has 17 points on three goals and 14 assists in 58 career games.
Ryan Hughes (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) is a sophomore midfielder on the men's lacrosse team. He played in all 15 games for the Bears this season with 14 starts. He had a career-high 21 points on 14 goals and nine assists and collected 13 ground balls. The computer science major was a member of the SUNYAC Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll as a freshman.
Drew Rose (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) is a sophomore midfielder on the men's lacrosse team. Rose was also a member of the SUNYAC Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll in his first year at Potsdam. The business administration major started 14 games this season and played in all 15. He was third on the team in scoring with 30 points on 25 goals and 12 assists. In his two seasons with the Bears, Rose has 50 points in 28 games played. He has also been a defenseman on the men's hockey team for two seasons. On the ice, Rose has eight goals and 12 assists for 20 points in 44 games. This winter he posted a career-high 13 points on six goals and seven assists.
