FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA.—SUNY Potsdam's first intercollegiate swimming and diving coach Scott Woodburn passed away on Tuesday, November 25. He was 82.
Woodburn was born in Weathersfield, Conn. He graduated from Southern Connecticut State University in 1966 where he was a two-time NCAA College Division Honorable Mention All-American swimmer.
Woodburn was hired by the College in the Fall of 1967 to guide the Bears swimming and diving program during its first season as an intercollegiate sport. He led the program to many strides in his three campaigns in Potsdam, including the Bears' first national qualifier. He was also Potsdam's head track and field coach.
Woodburn moved on to St. Lawrence University in 1970 and helped the Saints to the 1976 National Championship. After leaving the North Country in 1977 he also served as head coach for Division I University of South Carolina and Louisiana State University. After leaving coaching, Woodburn transitioned to athletic administration and worked for several institutions including the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
Woodburn was inducted into both the SLU Athletic Hall of Fame and the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Hall of Fame in 2024.
