POTSDAM, N.Y.—One SUNY Potsdam men's basketball player and three women's basketball players have been named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District teams. The all-district teams, selected by athletic communications directors, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.
To be eligible for honor, athletes need to maintain a 3.5 GPA, be a sophomore, compete in 90-percent of the games, or start in 66-percent of games.
Nicholas Cortez (Harlem, N.Y./La Salle Academy) is a sophomore guard for the men's basketball team. The Exercise Science major started in all 25 games for the Bears. Cortez averaged 15.7 points-per-game with 107 assists. The sophomore also totaled 93 rebounds and 51 steals throughout the season. He scored 393 points, second best on the team.
Senior forward
Jenna Cotter (Johnson City, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) is a double major in Exercise Science and Psychology. This is the third straight year Cotter has received this award. She started in all 25 games this season, averaging 13.1 points-per-game and scoring 327 points for the Bears. She grabbed 191 rebounds throughout the year. Cotter was also named to the All-SUNYAC third team after ranking second in the conference in blocks (48) and field goal percentage at (47.3).
Mikayla Shipley (North Chili, N.Y./Churchville Chili) is a senior guard double majoring in Biology and Psychology. She is also a three-peat recipient for this honor. Shipley started in 21 of the 25 games this season, averaging 3.8 points-per-game and 2.1 assists-per-game and totaling 56 rebounds.
Senior guard
Carley Hill (Essex, Vt./Rice Memorial) also represents the Bears on the all-district team. The Business major started all 25 games and averaged 7.2 ppg. Hill 2-point shooting, 38-percent, was third best in the conference. She had 69 rebounds with 16 steals and 26 assists.
The men's basketball team finished with a 7-18 (7-11 SUNYAC) record this season. The women's team finished with an overall mark of 10-15 and 6-12 in SUNYAC play.
