Box Score POTSDAM, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team battled Brockport for 74 minutes, before coming up short by a score of 2-0. The Golden Eagles (9-5-1, 4-4 SUNYAC) saw Gina Laing and Kaila Maguire score second half goals to ensure the victory.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the first half of play. Brockport would end the half with a 6-1 advantage in shots but couldn't manage a good scoring opportunity.
The Bears (3-10-2, 0-8) best scoring chance of the match came in the second half. Sophomore
Ashley Thayer sent a cross in front of the net that was knocked down by goalkeeper Erin Asquith. The ball was up for grabs in front of an open net before Brockport's defense sent it down the field. After that opportunity, the Golden Eagles broke through. Laing took advantage of a free ball in front of the goal to break the scoreless tie. Brockport struck again less than six minutes later as Maguire would be set up by Lauren Drago for the game's last score.
Senior goalkeeper
Dedra Palmer registered five saves in the losing effort. Asquith made one save to post the shutout.
“I thought we played well for the most part,” said Misiak. “It's disappointing that we allowed the goals we did because I thought they were preventable. It's a game of mistakes and if you make an error you are going to pay for it.”
The Bears return to action tomorrow at 3 p.m. as they host Geneseo in the SUNYAC finale. Potsdam will honor their seniors with a brief pre-game ceremony before taking the field.
