Bears edge Oswego, 3-2

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (2-4-1, 2-4-1 ECAC West) scored three first period goals en route to a 3-2 ECAC West victory over visiting Oswego State (2-4-2, 2-2-2) on Sunday afternoon. Senior defenseman Breanna Roy, sophomore assistant captain Brittany Lucky, and sophomore forward Jessica Silveira  each scored for the Bears.

Potsdam put in one of its strongest first period performances of the season. Roy opened the scoring with a blast from the slot that caught the shoulder of Oswego sophomore goaltender Catherine Coté and dribbled across the goal line at 5:28. The Lakers won the ensuing faceoff and Oswego sophomore forward Carly Henderson brought the puck into the Potsdam zone on the left side and fired a shot. Bears sophomore goalie Dawna Salvarinas made the initial save, but Laker freshman forward Carly Marchment jammed home the rebound to tie the score. The Bears answered just over 10 minutes later with power-play goals from Lucky and sophomore forward Silveira at 14:49 and 18:50, respectively.

Goalie play and penalty killing were the stories of the second period. The teams combined for seven second period penalties, four for Oswego and three for the Bears. The power plays allowed the offenses to pepper the goaltenders throughout the period, but Coté stopped all 11 shots and Salvarinas made 14 saves. The score remained 3-1 Potsdam at the second intermission.

Oswego was able to put a lot of pressure on the Potsdam defense in the third period, outshooting Bears 12-6. At 3:17, Laker senior captain Kathryn Sbrocchi tipped a shot from the point past Salvarinas to cut the lead to 3-2. Despite controlling the play territorially for much of the period, Oswego couldn't get any closer. With 1:45 remaining, the Lakers pulled Coté for an extra attacker and the Bears struggled to clear their zone. However, Salvarinas stood tall in the closing seconds and sealed the win.

Salvarinas finished with 33 saves and Coté stopped 23 shots. Potsdam was 2-7 on the power play and Oswego finished 0-5.

“We're really happy getting three points on the weekend,” said Potsdam Head Coach Jay Green. “Tonight was just an overall great effort from everyone. Dawna Salvarinas played great in net. I thought we played a very discipline game from start to finish. I couldn't be happier with the effort and execution.”

The Bears are back in action when they host Elmira College on Dec. 3-4.
