ASTON, Pa.—The SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (8-8-3, 5-8-3 ECAC West) fell behind 3-0 to Neumann College (7-10-2, 6-8-2) and were unable to complete the comeback, losing 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. Senior captain
Annmarie Lewis scored two goals for the Bears.
Neumann jumped out in front for good at 10:04 of the first period when Kayla Dubowski struck for a shorthanded goal. Nicole Alexopoulous doubled the score just 1:15 into the second period and Lynsey Nakamura made it 3-0 11 minutes later. Lewis finally got Potsdam on the board at the 14:03 mark with assists from sophomore defenseman
Brittany Lucky and freshman forward
Izzy Fayerman. Just as the emotions and momentum started to shift in the Bears' direction a breakdown allowed the Knights to regain their three-goal lead. Alexopoulous made it 4-1 with 1:58 left in the period. Lewis answered 41 seconds later on assists from Lucky and senior captain
Brandi Atwell and Potsdam trailed 4-2 at the second intermission.
Potsdam controlled the play in the third period, pinning Neumann in its own zone for much of the last 20 minutes, but struggled to score. At 5:51, freshman forward
Alexandra Holowka made it a one goal contest. Sophomore forward
Jessica Silveira and senior defenseman
Breanna Roy each assisted on the goal. The Bears continued to pressure and pulled sophomore goalie
Dawna Salvarinas with 1:02 remaining while on the power play, but couldn't get the equalizer.
Neumann's Shannon Donnelly made 22 saves for the win and Salvarinas finished with 23.
“We were undisciplined and didn't play well enough to win,” said Bears Head Coach
Jay Green. “Every time we got sloppy, they capitalized. Still,
Annmarie Lewis played unbelievably well and
Breanna Roy probably had the best weekend of her career.”
Potsdam is back in action Feb. 10-11, when they host Chatham for two games with a chance to clinch a playoff spot for the second time in program history. Faceoff is 7 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday.
