Box Score POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Brockport (2-2, 1-1 SUNYAC) scored quickly and then held off the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (1-3, 0-2) for a 6-3 win on Friday evening. Freshmen forwards
Jakub Hall (Anchorage, Alaska/Richmond Generals) and
Will O'Brien (Jefferson Hills, Pa./HC Rhode Island) each scored their first collegiate goals and sophomore assistant captain
Mason Hoehn (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Richmond Generals) netted his fourth.
The Golden Eagles opened the scoring just 18 seconds into the contest as freshman forward Schuyler Flansberg (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) banged home a rebound. Less than four minutes later, Brockport grabbed a 2-0 lead on a goal from junior defenseman Jordan Rosenbaum (Gibsonia, Pa./Northern Cyclone). Hall got the Bears on the board at 17:54 with an assist from sophomore forward
Mathieu Parent (Kapukasing, Ontario/Renfrew Wolves). Potsdam trailed 2-1 after 20 minutes.
The Bears got even just 2:03 into the second period. O'Brien buried a feed from sophomore forward
Payton Felix (De Peyster, N.Y./Northeast Generals) with fellow sophomore forward
Max Klanow (Holly, Mich./Hawkesbury Hawks) picking up the second assist. Potsdam's momentum was halted with an interference penalty 49 seconds later and Brockport made the Bears pay. Freshman forward Spencer Flansberg (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) netted a power-play goal at 4:40 with the first of three markers in a 3:11 span. Senior forward Michael Meredith (Fredonia, N.Y./Walpole Express) made it 4-2 at 6:49 after stealing the puck at the Bears blue line and taking it the distance. At 7:51, Schuyler Flansburg struck again for a 5-2 advantage. After the goal Potsdam freshman goalie
Lenny Perno (Rochester, N.Y./Richmond Generals) relieved junior starter
John Werber (Skillman, N.J./Team Maryland) to make his college debut. Perno stopped the bleeding with six saves over the rest of the period. The Eagles took a 5-2 advantage into the second intermission.
Brockport continued to pressure the Bears but couldn't gain ground thanks to more stellar play from Perno. The goaltender stopped all 20 shots he faced in the third period. After a too many men call on the Eagles, Potsdam took advantage. Hoehn scored nine seconds into the power play and the Bears were back within two. Sophomore forward
Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Junior Islanders) and sophomore defenseman
Michael Campbell (Toronto, Ontario/Jersey Whalers) had the assists. With just over five minutes left, Eagles senior goalie Dylan Wiemer (Greece, N.Y./East Coast Wizards) stonewalled Mahlmeister on a breakaway that would have closed the gap to one. With 1:10 left, Perno was pulled for an extra attacker. However, Brockport sealed the win with an empty-net goal from freshman forward Ben Saurbaugh (Painted Post, N.Y./Express Hockey Club) at 0:27.
Wiemer finished with 27 saves for win. Werber made 21 saves in the first 27:51. Perno was perfect with 26 stops in 31:26.
Brockport was 1-for-1 on the power play and the Bears were 1-for-2.
Potsdam is back in action tomorrow night when they host No. 8 Geneseo at 5 p.m.
