Dr. Charles “Chip” Hunter, hired as an assistant professor of physical education in 1959, established SUNY Potsdam’s first varsity golf team in 1961. In 1977, Hunter led the college’s lacrosse club into NCAA varsity status and was SUNYAC’s Lacrosse Coach of the Year in 1984. Hunter was also the Bears men’s basketball coach from 1959-1962.
Besides coaching and teaching, Hunter was also the first director of Potsdam’s Star Lake Campus. In 1967, he co-founded the New York State Outdoor Education Association and served as its second president.
Hunter served as Potsdam’s Director of Community Relations from 1971 through 1980, when he became manager of Maxcy Hall. Named Chairman of Health, Physical Education and Athletics in 1985, Hunter held the position until his retirement in 1990. As chairman, he was a founding committee member of the Sports Hall of Fame.
After earning both his bachelor’s and master’s from SUNY Cortland, Hunter received his doctorate from Springfield College in 1971.
