Not even the United States Army could keep Ray Holmes from an outstanding athletic career at Potsdam College.
Holmes came to Potsdam in 1949 and stepped in as a starter on the basketball and baseball teams for the Bears. He was the basketball team’s third-leading scorer as a freshman.
Three years in the army followed his freshman year, but it didn’t hurt Holmes’ production. He recaptured starting spots in both basketball, where he was the team’s second-leading scorer, and baseball, as a sophomore in 1954-55.
Holmes remained a star in both sports for the next two seasons and led the 1957 Potsdam baseball team to a perfect 13-0 record. That team was ranked among the best small-college squads in the nation.
After graduating in 1957, Holmes was a highly successful basketball coach at Chateaugay Central and Plattsburgh High. He is presently athletic director at Plattsburgh High.
Potsdam College is please to induct Raymond Holmes into its Sports Hall of Fame.
