Hall of Fame
Ted Bence, a Watertown native, played varsity basketball for the Bears from 1970-74. He was one of the top players in the distinguished history of Potsdam basketball.
After gaining experience in his rookie campaign, Bence burst onto the scene as a sophomore, averaging 13.2 points and 10 rebounds a game for the powerful 22-2 Bears team. In his junior year, the numbers became even more impressive at 16 points and 12 rebounds a game.
The 6-foot-7 center averaged 17.7 points and 10 rebounds at an outing during his senior season.
He is the all-time leading rebounder (887) and the fifth all-time scorer (1,307) in Potsdam basketball history.
He teamed with fellow Hall of Famers Hank Darden and Mike Deane to lead Potsdam to three NCAA College Division Tournament appearances. Bence was an All-East performer and an All-SUNYAC selection in 1973 and 1974.
After graduating in 1974, Bence coached and taught at Poland and Port Byron High Schools. He is presently manager of an investment firm in Kansas City, Mo.
