Hall of Fame
Randy Brown was a mainstay in goal during his four years on a very young Potsdam College hockey team. His desire to succeed and devotion to the sport played a large role in establishing the Bears as a quality Division III program.
The 1980-81 season saw Brown lead Potsdam to its first-ever winning record. During this campaign, he set an NCAA record for most consecutive shutout minutes, and was chosen a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) All-Star. Brown continued to stand out his senior year as he led the Bears to their first Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) playoff appearance, and made over 40 saves in an overtime win against top seed Oswego in a road game. Brown’s athletic and academic excellence earned him the 1982 Maxcy-Molnar Award, and many of his school goaltending records still stand, including most games played and most shots faced.
Brown continued his association with athletics and academics after his graduation from Potsdam. He served as Potsdam College assistant hockey coach under John Horan for two years. Northwood Prep School in Lake Placid employed Brown as assistant hockey coach and teacher from 1984-87. From 1987-91, he taught and was head baseball coach at Salmon River Central School, where he was named Section X Coach of the Year in 1991. Brown currently teaches and is head hockey coach at Canton Central School. His teams have compiled an outstanding 62-19-5 record under his tutelage, and his 1992-93 squad was crowned New York State Division II champions.
Brown earned a master’s degree in instructional technology and media management from Potsdam College in 1992. He lives in Helena, N.Y., with his wife Marie-Noel, and two children, Nicholas Andrew and Samantha Marie.
